MAH Visits Schools
MAH is pleased to announce the availability of our technical staff for local school visits. The staff brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to the classroom. The focus of the visits are to get students excited about careers in the veterinary industry, from Customer Care to RVT to Doctor. By the staff sharing stories and offering information, the students are able to understand both the educational requirements and the gratification these careers offer. The visits could also include the viewing of x-rays, medical instruments and a general pet question and answer session. For more information, or to reserve your time and date, please contact the hospital at 462-8833 and ask for Nancy. Availability is limited.
Useful informational videos
"How to pill your cat" as well as a wealth of other videos can be accessed at partnersah.vet.cornell.edu/pet. This site has a lot of information you may find helpful in answering questions on pet care.
Indoor Cat Health
We know that stress plays an important role in our health and we now know of at least one feline illness that is caused almost wholly by stress. This problem has had many names in the past...Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS), Cystitis, Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), to name a few. This condition is characterized by straining to urinate and pain and blood in the urine but no infection or crystals, therefore no obvious cause. The name for this syndrome is now Feline Interstitial Cystitis (FIC), indicating a clear reference to a problematic syndrome in women called Interstitial Cystitis.
Given that stress plays an important part in this disease, as cat owners, we want to do as much as we can to support and maintain the health of our indoor kitties. The following website is devoted to the Indoor Cat and is a great reference for all cat owners: vet.osu.edu/indoorcat.htm.
Monthly Low Cost Vaccine Clinic
Vaccine Clinic is on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 10am in the lobby of the hospital. This is a walk-in clinic for vaccines only. Please have cats in carriers and dogs on leash. You can check the Pet Portal for information on the vaccinations your pet needs to update. See the Pet Portal button on top of our home page.
Senior Holistic Health Evaluation
Dr. Sommers, our Holistic Veterinarian, is now offering a special Comprehensive Senior Health Screening Program. This health package includes senior screening lab tests, a comprehensive exam including orthopedic and behavior evalutation as well as an eye exam, and nutritional consultation. This is geared towards those caregivers interested in a natural approach to health care for their animals and those who want to incorporate natural remedies and alternative therapies into the care of their pets. For more information call our office.
AHHA recertification
On April 13, MAH successfully completed an inspection by the American Animal Hospital Association. We were evaluated on more than 900 standards to ensure that patients and clients receive the highest level of care. Our
hospital is among only the 15% of veterinary practices throughout the U.S. that have made this voluntary commitment to excellence. We have been an AAHA accredited hospital since 2006. As a team we have been proud to demonstrate our individual skills and devotion to our chosen profession.
Mendocino Animal Hospital Has Gone Digital
Our Digital Radiography System takes our radiology services to the next level. Enhanced patient care and diagnostic capability is achieved with this system's state of the art xray image quality. We can view and share your pet's xray images within minutes! We are also able to electronically send these images to Board Certified Veterinary Radiologists when an expert opinion is needed.
Continuing Education at MAH
As a group and individually we receive and share ongoing CE (Continuing Education) in a variety of ways. At our monthly staff meetings we are presented with information we can apply to our daily interactions with clients and patients. Our goal is to provide the most up to date therapies, vaccinations, and medications as research and studies prove effective.
The Elsie Brown Fund
Elsie Brown was a delightful client of Mendocino Animal Hospital, during the 1980s, and a wonderful caregiver for her little Schnauzer named "Molly" and then later on a little mixed breed named "Sparky." A widow, Elsie lived alone and her dogs were her family...by extension her veterinarians were family also. Dr. Rice oversaw Elsie's affairs during her final years and it was Elsie's wish that, after her death, whatever funds survived her would be put to use helping pets in need — especially belonging to senior citizens on too tight budgets or senior pets in need of a little extra TLC.
Since 1992, the Elsie Brown fund has helped innumerable deserving pets. We periodically have fund raisers to replenish this fund and we welcome anyone who wishes to donate in memory of a special pet or individual. Just talk to one of the receptionists.
Thank you!!
